10 Best Track Spikes of All-Time

Best Track Spikes

When you sprint there is a special relationship with your track spikes. They become an extension of yourself and they really are the only piece of equipment you need to train.

When you get a new pair of spikes and break them out of the box, you can't wait to do your first stride in them. Sometimes its love at first site, and other times you need to get a race under your belt before the love becomes real.

I ran track from age 7 until I was 24 years-old. Through those years I got to do everything from high school championships, to the Olympics and everything in between. Through those years I had some spikes I wish I could have worn forever. Finally, I had to rank the best of the best track spikes.

Advantages of Wearing The Best Spikes

  • Every Split Second Counts
  • Professional sprinters and other track and field athletes know how drastically a split second is when you're racing. Spikes with great traction and minimal weight might just be the difference between breaking a record or not.
  • Different Types of Spikes
  • Depending on what kind of runner you are, you will find different kinds of track spikes. Are you a sprinter, mid-distance runner, or a cross country runner? The disposition and amount of cushioning on your spikes will make the difference depending on the kind of running you are doing. Even with in sprint spikes, some have harder foot plates than other.
  • Glove Like Fit
  • You know sprint spikes are great for you when they give you that boost in confidence. They should fit like a glove. After a while they should feel just like your feet or wearing socks. The lest you have to think about your spikes, the faster you can run.

Important Things to Consider When Looking For Your Best Spikes

Are you still confused on where exactly you should start? If so, don't worry because we have you covered!  Here are some helpful tips to point you in the right direction.

  • If you are a sprinter and want to improve your performance, then you need lightweight spikes with as hard of a plate as you can handle. These track spikes have a stiff sole and a rigid spike plate, which will ultimately help you waste less time on the ground.
  • If you are a middle distance track runner, you need a pair of spikes that are cushioned, yet made of light materials. You also need to be able to configure the spikes on the bottom of the shoe. This will help you race anywhere between 400 meters and 1500 meters.
  • If you are a cross country running, you need unique spikes that are made for long distance running. Shop around for spikes that have a medium to narrow heel, wider forefoot, medium to low arch structure, and a curved shoe shape.
  • Because of the lightweight material that track spikes are made of, consider the fact that they are not durable.
