If you were asked about your aspirations and aims for the future, what would you say? The chances are the answer would be some version of “success”, regardless of the industry you work in.

Everyone wants to be successful, but the problem is that this term is so vague, it can leave us constantly chasing something that’s undefined.

Strategies and planning are an integral part of achieving success because they help to map out the path you need to follow and more clearly define what you’re trying to achieve.

Clear Priorities

Without clear and concise strategic planning, you may find yourself with conflicting priorities. This, in turn, can lead to poor time management as you try to split yourself between activities rather than committing to one thing wholeheartedly.

When you plan your goals and form a strategy, you can pencil in everything you want to achieve and create a realistic timescale for them all. Rather than trying to juggle multiple activities, and not really succeeding at any, you’ll have a far more defined idea of what needs your attention and for how long.

You shouldn’t understand how important it is to be clear about your priorities. Getting distracted from a course of action is one of the critical barriers, and having a strategy and a mapped out path can help to overcome this.

What Does Success Look Like?

Whatever you’re trying to achieve, your goals are uniquely personal to you. What feels like failure to one person may feel like success to another, so it’s imperative to define what you would consider to be success.

It’s often a good idea to set short, medium and long-term goals which align with each other. This gives you the satisfaction of aiming for smaller milestones, an excellent strategy to keep you motivated while pursuing long-term success.

Knowing what your “success” means will enable you to recognise your achievements more clearly. It also helps you to identify if your strategies are working, or whether you need to rethink your approach.

Applies to All Areas

Strategies and planning are buzzwords that are often used in business, and to significant effect, but they apply just as equally to your personal life. It may seem rather clinical to think of your life goals in terms of strategy and planning, but it’s something that we all do every day, even if you don’t realise it.

It may be that you’ve read up on blackjack basic strategies for when you’re at the table playing, or coping mechanisms to manage your job. You may even have a subconscious means of dealing with your relationship and defining what you want from the future.

Every aspect of your life would benefit from clearer vision and honest conversations – and that’s what strategy boils down to.

Taking the most simple analogy of a game of blackjack, the question is, how much do you want to bet? How much do you want to win? And how much risk are you prepared to accept? Once you know your answers to those three questions, you can choose one of the many blackjack strategies which most closely aligns with your goals.

The same approach works with your personal relationships: understand what you want, and seek out a partner whose goals align with yours.

Talking about strategies and planning might sound unromantic, but “hopes and dreams” are essentially the same thing, but just with a bit more substance!
Take control of your life in all areas and think about what you really want, and guaranteed, you’ll enjoy a far more successful and happier outcome.
