Your goal is to see how far you can go. You want to realize your potential and not leave any what-ifs in your life. This is a positive thing, but there are some traps on this path. The deep thoughts listed in this article will get you to think on a new level.

These are questions and statements that help you think about life and your purpose on a new level. You don't want to spend your entire life chasing something that is of no value. You want to know that direction you are headed in the right way.

“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”

Why You Need Deep Thoughts

Think about how most of your thinking is throughout the day. You see a tweet or some social media post and get a quick giggle. Maybe you send it to an old friend, and you guys share a memory. You talk with your wife about her day. Read a couple of news stories. All of these basic tasks don't require any deep thoughts.

Deep thinking requires your concentration and full effort: no music, cell phone, or any other modern-day distraction. Deep thinking is where you take time to understand the world and yourself on a deeper level.
You need this type of thinking because it's what produces real results. The reason reading is so powerful is because it can force you into deep thought. Ever read a book, and you just had to stop and think for a second? That is the book pushing your mind to a new level and way of thinking.

Deep thinking helps you to see the world differently. When you see the world differently, you approach it much differently as well. You come up with new ways to solve old problems.

  • Most of your thinking is very shallow
  • Deep thinking helps to produce the best results
  • Deep thinking can change your perceptive

Deep Thoughts

1. What about success really matters?

There is a reason you tell people you want to be successful, and then there are the deep-seated reasons. Sometimes the real reasons you want to succeed are ugly. It's one thing if you're going to lie to others, but take the time, to be honest with yourself.

When you understand and embrace your motivations, you can use them to help you. Some reasons people want success

  • Money
  • Freedom
  • Sex
  • Status
  • Self-confidence

There are more reasons but may feed off of the list above. Be honest with yourself and think deeply on why that is.

2. Why is failure scary?

This question is the same as above, and only it highlights the negative consequence you run from. Failure gets a bad rep, and it ends up being like the monster in your closet as a kid. You fear it and lose sleep over something that is not there at all.

Get to the core of why you're afraid. I list some examples below, but it's up to you to find out your why? What has stopped you from becoming everything that you want to be? Once you know this, you can create strategies to overcome it.

  • Fear of poverty
  • Fear of death
  • Fear of criticism
  • Fear of old age
  • Fear of heartbreak

3. In the history of humans (200,000 years) you may spend 100 years here

It's not guaranteed that you live to 100, but if you do, you will spend that long your life is such a small part of the big picture. That is just with planet earth and not even including the rest of the universe.

James 4:14 says: "yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes."

This means that if you want to make an impact, you better start taking action today. Your quick mist of a life that comes and goes does not have much time to do that.

4. When people think about traveling to the past, they worry about accidentally changing the present, but no one in the present really thinks they can radically change the future.

This one may blow your mind, but what you do today will impact the future. There is no need to go back in time. All you have to do is picture yourself 10 years from now coming back to this point. What would you do if you could relive the next 10 years?

Once you think deeply about that answer, go start doing it. Go live the life that would make you in 10 years never want to go back in time. It's so powerful to think about how much you can change the future if you try.

5. Will your future self love you or hate you?

Every decision you make in your life is for your future self or your current self. When you make choices, for now, they tend to be worse for your future self. Things like drug addiction, junk food, gossip, and entertainment are fantastic in the moment. But in the future, they have disastrous consequences.

Stop and think about your life today and what you are doing. In 10 years, will your future self love the person you are today? Break that question down for these four areas.

  1. Wealth
  2. Health
  3. Love
  4. Happiness

If the future self does not love who you are in these areas, start making changes right away.

More Deep Thoughts

6. If I get everything I want, what negative qualities will that bring out of me?

People always look at stars and athletes that get in trouble with the law and scoff at how ridiculous it is. We live with this notion that if you gt all the money and success, you want your life will be perfect, but we are shown time and time again that this is not true.

Success brings out ugly qualities. What would they be for you? Would money make you chase after sex all day? Would world travel make you think you're better than others? You have to figure out.

When you know how getting what you want can change you, it gives you a chance to work in that area before it destroys you.

7. What goes to the grave with you?

When you think deeply about this question, it forces you to think about life after death. If you spend your whole life working for things that don't come to the grave, what is the point of it all?

What things have you missed in life that are for more valuable than what you're working for? You have to dig deep and get some real answers.

8. Whose life would not be remotely the same without you?

Suppose you answer this question and say no one that should terrify you. You can't have an impact if you don't impact people. Every day you have the opportunity to make an impact on someone's life. You can help, teach, mentor, love, or be anything else that other human needs.

9. What are you hoping for but not working for?

What is on your list of things that you want, but you are making no progress towards it? Some so many people want to be authors, but they never write. It makes no sense because they will never get there. If you stake consistent steps towards something, you are guaranteed to get there if you have enough time.

Once you know what you're hoping for but not working for, start tracking your habits to ensure that you get there on time. Do something every day to make sure that you're getting closer to the things you're hoping for.

10. What do you consistently waste time on?

If there is one thing that deep thinking reminds you of its that life is short. Most people are big on dreams and short on time and execution. If you want to be successful at anything you have to cut out the wasted time.

Figure out what is wasting your life away and get rid of it. Come up with plans to kill that focus killer so that you can put more of your time into things that matter.

How to Create Space for Deep Thought

Here is the final issue you need to tackle. You can know that you need to spend time in deep thought, but no know how to get the time to do it.

Most people don't have space in their life to think. Most people get their best thinking done in the shower because it's the only time the mind gets to relax enough to think correctly.

The first thing you need to do is schedule time for this thinking. The same way you schedule a meeting. You need to block time for this deep thinking. It should be a 10-30 minute block at least once a week.

Once you have the time blocked, it's all about showing up. If you have a meeting you set, but you don't show up, it won't matter. The same is true for this time block, and you have to take it seriously and do it.

The next thing you want to do is set the stage by taking some deep breaths. It will help you get away from your life to clear your mind like when you get in the shower.

Then the last thing you do is think. Spend time just thinking about some of the questions above. Don't try and think about more than 1-3 of the questions in a session.

Review of Steps

1. Block Time

2. Show-Up

3. Breathe Deep For a Few Minutes

4. Think

Conclusion of Deep Thought

The best thing you can do for your life and success is to regularly spend time in deep thought. When you can meditate on some of the questions above, you will clarify what is important.

You will be able, to be honest with yourself and catch some missteps in your thinking. If you can correct your thinking, you will get your actions in line, and success will be yours.
