Before You Quit Do This 10 Times

My brother dropped a monster tweet series that reminded me of something significant. It jumped out to me how Gary Vee made 1000 videos for Wine Library before anyone knew his name. I contrast this to the number of people I know who tell me they will do something, and they do it for three days and then give up. They tell me how no one cares like they thought it would, so that must be a sign that it won’t work. I am here to say you have to do this one thing 10 times before you quit.

I’ll Give it a Year

Before people are getting ready to start anything, they usually give it a year. Then they evaluate and most likely quit because the project is not where they thought it would be. Maybe you have done this a few times yourself. I know I have and I hate it!

The thing I need you to do 10 times says that you will give it a year for 10 years. That’s right I need you to stick it out for that long. There is something powerful about pursuing one thing for a very long time. When you see people that you deem to be successful, you can guarantee that there was a time where they were grinding in the dark, and no one knew their name.

16 Years Running for The Olympics

My brother and I trained for about 16 years to make our first Olympic team. I am not preaching about 10 years from reading books and learning about others. I have seen it in my own life. It took 5 years of training to understand what it took to succeed. It took another 5 to develop the skill set and get it sharp. Then it took another 5 years of working at a high level to be one of the best in the world.

Sports are not unique. I think it is easier to see this in sports because when you are growing older, you get stronger and become an adult. From that process, it’s expected that you become a better athlete. It’s assumed like maturity comes with age. We know for a fact that maturity does not come with age for all.

Is a Decade of Your Life Worth it?

You might be thinking that 10 years is a long time! You’re right, it is! You should only start things that are worth trading 10 years of your life for. If the idea of giving up 10 years of experience is unbearable, then you should not start. If you want to succeed so badly that you will put in 9 years to get an ounce of success, you can go forward.

If you go in with the expectation that it will take way less time, that is a bonus. But if you go in thinking will come quick and easy, you will get blindsided by the grind. The work you are doing will seem pointless. You will feel like all the time you are putting in is going towards nothing.

Conclusion

Don't give up too early. You will miss all of the amazing rewards that come from hanging in there.
